Determinations (Annual Picture)

Nine full determinations were publicized from April to December. These comprised of eight on maladministration; whereas, one was on alleged baby switching. In the latter determination the findings were based conclusively through DNA test. The Ombudsman found that no baby was switched but instead the Hospital used careless methods to identify babies resulting in one baby being given to a wrong mother. The Ombudsman, amongst the four recommendations stated that:

  • The Hospital fully apologies to the complainant
  • The Hospital must counsel the Complainant at its own expenses or cost.

In addition from January to September 2013, the Ombudsman has resolved three (3) short form determinations on what the office sees and classify as “quick fix” complaints. Several other complaints were resolved mutually through negotiations with the Ombudsman as a mediator between the parties.
